Travelling light!

So, last week the theme for the NZ Style Curvettes Outfit Challenge was ‘Travel’, and ya’ll know I do a lot of travelling for work so I was alllll over this theme!

I consider myself a master of packing light. Well, actually, I take more stuff everywhere than most people own…..but that’s because when I’m travelling, I’m travelling for work, so my luggage allowance is chock full of studio lights, camera gear, hairdressing tools, and a full makeup kit. All these things leave very little room for clothes….so I’ve learned to pack like a pro!

Basically me. No, seriously.

Basically me. No, seriously.

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, I do ‘memorable’ well – big colour / big prints / big hair, big everything! This means that it’s important to make sure that all of my outfits for events are distinctly different, which can become a problem when I’m trying to fit lots of outfits into an itty-bitty bag! This is why I’ve figured out a formula…

1. Pick a colour scheme
This gives you the chance to mix and match pieces, and pack less accessories – which saves luggage space!
This week I’ve picked green, yellow, and orange – with both white and black neutral options.

2. Think ‘Capsule Wardrobe’…only smaller!
If I’m going away for six days I only need two skirts, a dress, and three tops, as well as two or three cardigans depending on the weather! For this fake-holiday I’ve packed one plain skirt, one printed skirt, one printed dress, two plain tops, one printed top, and three plain cardigans. This leaves me with more than enough choice for six days. If I find myself with a little more space than expected, I’ll add a few more accessory options to the bag – In this case maybe a green nylon scarf, or possibly another hair flower, and some more colourful bangles.

3. Only bring accessories that are multi-use
If most of your outfits have a white base, just bring one white petticoat / belt / whatever, rather than taking up valuable luggage space with things that can only go with one outfit.  My planned colour scheme is nice and simple, and all the pieces I have will look good with yellow accessories, so I have a yellow petticoat, mini satchel bag, ribbon belt, and flats, as well as a yellow necklace and bangle, a pineapple brooch, a green and yellow vintage brooch, and a sweet pair of vintage fruit earrings that have bananas dangling from them!
Attention to detail at this point means that my outfits will look polished and well-accessorised all week, and I won’t have to wear four different petticoats and 20 hair flowers on the plane because they don’t fit in the suitcase!

So that’s the theory…let’s see how I did!

Day 1 – Tuesday
Travel - Day 1_4

I kicked things off on Tuesday with a whole lot of green!
Because I picked green as a main colour for the week I could wear my green glasses, which perfectly match a pair of my favourite sunglasses too! This meant it would be an easy swap – they’re almost the same size and shape, so I’d only need to pack one glasses case because I’d either be wearing my actual glasses or my sunglasses all the time, right?

Travel - Day 1_14

I also like to wear my hair mostly out (either set or straight) at the beginning of a trip, because that’s when it’s cleanest. I begin to wear it up as it starts to look dirty, and then by the end of the week I’m usually in a beehive!

Day 2 – Wednesday
Travel - Day 2_4

On day two in fake holiday land I did a some relaxing at a beach (READ: Stayed chained to my desk editing photos for hours and hours and hours)
I advanced the hair schedule a touch by mistake – I piled it up out of the way while I was tying up the halter on my dress, and just never got around to taking it out again – but that’s ok. I can do topknots or french rolls for the rest of the week since I’m on fake holiday and it doesn’t matter what my hair looks like!

When I’m going away, I always pack a dress that I can wear casually with a cardi but also on it’s own if I need to go out of an evening. This one is great for that, and also for another reason that I will divulge later in the week!

Travel - Day 4_5

Plus it’s covered in parrots too!

I really should take this opportunity to point out that I didn’t deliberately pick two pieces covered in colourful parrots for this challenge….I just have a surprising number of parrot-themed tropical prints in my wardrobe!

Day 3 – Thursday
Travel - Day 3_1

Thursday is the longest day of my week, with back-to-back classes from beginning to end, so I always try and go with comfort over anything else! This top is cute and pretty unstructured, which I love, but it does have an open back. This means I have to wear it with a cardi, because otherwise it shows off my brace and that’s not exactly pretty. Of course I have no problem with people knowing I wear a brace, but I don’t really want to advertise the fact either, and it’s hard to miss in a backless shirt!

Travel - Day 3_6

I’ve also been taking a lot of close up selfies of my glasses this week, I know, but that’s mostly because the green glasses with my pink hair look amaaaaaaazing. Such a good combo. I’ve always loved wearing green, but with this fuchsia colour in my hair it looks particularly good.

Day 4 – Friday!
Travel - Day 4_1

Friday was another day where I was chained to my desk, but I did have a friend coming for lunch so it made sense to change out of my dressing gown!
I wasn’t putting on makeup though, and my hair was definitely in a big messy top knot because nobody was paying me to look presentable.

Travel - Day 4_2

I also flagged the bamboo bangles today and went with my yellow beads and bangle, with my fruit earrings and this supremely cute pineapple brooch, to match the pineapples on my skirt!

Speaking of skirts……

 Travel - Day 4_6

…..this is not one!
In order to get the most use out of my dresses, I’m a huge fan of wearing them as skirts. It really only works with zip back dresses, but basically you just fold the top half down and cover it with a belt if it’s not got a defined waistband already. Easy!
If it’s looking a little bulky, tuck it into your petticoat as a bit of a ‘buffer’ layer. Of course, with a print this busy I didn’t really need to do that.

Excuse my very obvious black underwear - whoops!

Excuse my very obvious black underwear – whoops!

You also definitely need to tie any straps in a bow towards the ends or you’ll have weird dangling bits out the bottom of your skirt, which is less than ideal.

I had a visit from my very inquisitive cat while I was taking these photos. I have my camera set on a continuous timer and it auto-focuses before it takes each picture, so she got very interested in the lens moving and making noises!
Selene is a Norwegian Forrest Cat, so she’s huge and really really fluffy, and has the most amazing whiskers – and a big ol’ possum tail that’s just about as wide as she is!

Day 5 – Saturday

Travel - Day 5_1

Those days where you get dressed up to just not leave the house are the weirdest, but I had a challenge to fulfill!
These crossover-neck tops are not the best, but they are quite thin and take up very little space in a bag, as well as being a good substitute for swimwear, so I take at least one with me whenever I go anywhere! I usually wear the straps crossed in the back, but sometimes in place of a necklace I’ll wear them pinned at the front with a brooch.

Travel - Day 5_4

Possibly could have chosen a better brooch though, since this one stabbed me in the throat repeatedly whenever I leaned over, but you live and learn!

Day 6 – Sunday

Sunday was the last day of the challenge, and in true end-of-holiday fashion, I wore a heap of clothes!

Travel - Day 6_8

I always end up wearing most of my clothes home on the plane because I’ve bought too much stuff, so it makes sense for me to plan an outfit that consists of layers so I don’t look too much like I’ve just haphazardly worn everything I own!
I picked the two pieces that take up the most suitcase space- my printed dress and my plain skirt – , and layered them so that it looked like the bodice of my dress was just a top. Easy!
